Inspect native vector-operation support and explicit CPU fallback.

MLAI Research · SEPTEMBER 2026 · 1 min read · overview

Practical summary

Assess whether a target Apple workstation can use the optional Metal DOT path.

Status

Implementation status applies to the bounded source capabilities described here, not to a hosted product or benchmark result.

What it can help with

Assess whether a target Apple workstation can use the optional Metal DOT path.

These are potential pilot applications, not claims of customer outcomes.

What the source implements

ABI reports platform availability, whether native kernels are linked, and whether a Metal pipeline initialized. These fields have different meanings. If the native path is unavailable, the vector-operation implementation retains a CPU fallback with accelerated=false.

Available today

CPU vector operations and optional macOS Metal DOT dispatch are implemented.

How to evaluate it

Inspect backend status on the intended machine and compare native and fallback results. Publish latency or throughput only with a reproducible harness, workload, hardware and methodology.

Supporting research and guides

Read the accompanying archive entries: Latency Budgets for Real-Time AI Orchestration; Evaluating Metal acceleration and CPU fallback. Each distinguishes implemented behavior from proposed applications and includes pinned implementation evidence.

Limitations

  • CUDA and Vulkan dispatch are not linked in the inspected ABI GPU implementation.
  • A compiled kernel is not proof of acceleration on a particular machine or workload.
